JoE Smash Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Hello, I am a prolific game pad user...well now I am. My ASUS ROG laptop weighs like 50 pounds and I have trouble with the keys because I have small hands like a carnie. So now I use a controller. I have two issues that I tried to address through the Steam controller interface, but it's not totally working. Firstly even with the mouse/look sensitivity turned all the way down the look/aim with gun stick jumps 10 feet upon the slightest gentle nudge, making aiming pretty much impossible. I went into advanced controller settings via Steam and tried adjusting the curve gradient for more gradual responsiveness, messed with the dead zone, and tweeked the x and y sliders, and it helped some....but it's still pretty touchy. Doing all this is probably over some gamers heads. I'm sure many could figure it out, but not everyone. I am hoping at some point you could patch the ability to just tweaking this in game by changing the range of the in game slider to make things easier for everyone. I read some old posts or patches or something that lead me to believe this has been an ongoing issue historically, and the look sensitivity slider range has been jacked up before. The other bigger issue that I can't seem to fix, is it seems the ♺button or Y button on XBOX is mapped to open inventory, and then once in the inventory it is used for drop item, which pretty much makes me drop something every time I open my inventory. It super sucks when this occurs in pitch blackness in a shelter and it is usually something important. I tried to fix this again via the Steam controller settings by changing it to "release press" in both instances which says it issupposed to function as each time the button is pressed it is supposed to register as pressed and released even if I am still holding said button, and it won't register a separate new press until pressed again. It helped a little, but I still drop things pretty frequently. I think since it switches from gameplay mode to menu mode when the button is pressed, that switching of modes must somehow override the release press functionality and make opening of the menu detect holding the button as a new separate press even though it is not. Is there anyway this can be coded on your end to not immediately drop an item when the inventory is opened even if it detects the triangle or Y button being held down untill it is pressed a second separate time? It's seriously like I have to tap the button for a microsecond to not drop something every time I try to open the inventory....

However, I use a free program called Xpadder that allows me to map any key to any button, as well as make adjustments to sensitivity. I think it's compatible with all controller types, so you might want to give it a try.

You confused the hell out of me, with P4 title "Using PS4 controller through Steam Big Picture", then you go on to mention laptop, then xBox.
JoE Smash Posted June 30, 2017 Author Posted June 30, 2017 I'll think about it. I'm a stubborn SOB. The steam options are pretty versatile....the game just isn't accepting my changes. I don't want to remap any buttons. I am used to the defaults now, I just want them to work properly. I mean I suppose I could swap drop item (Y/triangle) with X which is actions....but I don't wanna! I want triangle or Y to just not drop my stuff after I open my inventory....

I was naming what triangle for PS4 is on an XBOX controller i.e. Y in case someone was using an XBOX controller and was having the same issue with the Y button.... It makes more sense if you use either a PS4 controller or an XBOX controller. Y on XBOX is the same as Triangle on PS4
nicko Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 i would think each platform (p4,Xbox,PC) might differ a bit with controls? they usually do don't they? well all i know from past experience each platform you have to get used to how you control it. or are you expecting them all to be the same?

No typically all the buttons do the exact same things, XBOX just puts the joy sticks in two different places, which aggravates me. The four buttons on XBOX (Y, B, A, and X) typically do the same thing as the PS4s Triangle, Circle, X, and Square. I prefer PS4 controllers though.

So by using Xpadder when you hit triangle or Y (for XBOX) it opens your inventory, but then does not immediately throw an item from your inventory on the ground?

When you use a program like Xpadder, you disable the in-game controller function, so that it thinks you are using a keyboard and mouse. Then you can map the buttons however you want. I think it took me maybe 5 minutes to set it all up. And then if you don't like a particular button mapping, it only takes a few seconds to make a change.

I dont get why people have to use third party software, when the game should do what is intended. maybe just explain in simple terms your issue to the devs and maybe they might find and add a solution in future builds?

You certainly don't have to use third-party programs. I'm simply offering another way to use your controller. A way that costs nothing, takes very little time to setup and is very versatile.

I was just trying to say why should game pad users need to even download install unknown third party software to play this game? pretty much that is how your get malware/trojens/viruses.

Xpadder is hardly unknown, and is very trustworthy. I've used it for years. Loved it so much, I even paid for it.
