Pwee
Hi, Please, help me fix graphics performance issues with my new laptop. I am a veteran player with 400+ hours in the game and I cannot wait for the new story mode to come out, but I am also excited about the new final sandbox patch changes. I was running the game on an older laptop before, and had an OK performance on Medium quality setting on 1600x900. I recently bought a new gaming laptop with a better GPU, so I expected to be able to run the gam smoothly at least on high settings. I was disappointed to see that I got sluggish performance even on medium! Some details: Fps is 13-15 when on medium quality settings and 1600x900 Fps is 17-20 when on medium quality settings and 1366x768 Fps is 8-9 when on high quality settings and 1600x900 All of the above were produced on a bright day with no significant wind or snowdrift, no fog ingame. (It was Mystery lake, but pefromance is just as poor on other maps as well) Laptop is connected to AC power and Windows power settings are set to maximize performance AMD Settings desktop App options are on default Ingame graphics settings are all on default I tried to play around with activating or deactivating Vsync in the AMD settings desktop app, with no noticeable effect All drivers are up to date according to Lenovo Companion, to Windows Update Manager, and to AMD Settings desktop app. General system info Windows Version - Windows 10 (64 bit) System Memory - 8 GB CPU Type - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz Graphics driver info Radeon Software Version - 17.6.2 Radeon Software Edition - Crimson ReLive Radeon Settings Version - 2017.0612.1651.28496 Driver Packaging Version - 17.10.3211.1011-170612a-315159E-CrimsonReLive Provider - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 2D Driver Version - 8.1.1.1599 Direct3D® Version - 9.14.10.01261 OpenGL® Version - 6.14.10.13476 OpenCL™ Version - 22.19.171.257 AMD Mantle Version - 9.1.10.0189 AMD Mantle API Version – 102400 AMD Audio Driver Version - Not Available Vulkan™ Driver Version - 1.5.0 Vulkan™ API Version - 1.0.39 Graphics card info Graphics Card Manufacturer - Powered by AMD Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon (TM) R7 M360 Device ID – 6900 Vendor ID – 1002 SubSystem ID – 3989 SubSystem Vendor ID - 17AA Revision ID – 81 Bus Type - PCI Express 3.0 Current Bus Settings - PCI Express 3.0 x4 BIOS Version - 015.049.000.012 BIOS Part Number - BR46734.002 BIOS Date - 2016/02/02 02:07 Memory Size - 2048 MB Memory Type - DDR3 Memory Clock - 1000 MHz Core Clock - 984 MHz Total Memory Bandwidth - 16 GByte/s Memory Bit Rate - 2.00 Gbps The laptop has an integrated graphics card as well: Intel HD Graphics 620 Driver version: 21.20.16.4550
FINDarkside
Make sure that the game is not using your integrated gpu. You can see that from the log file at: steamapps\common\TheLongDark\tld_Data\output_log.txt
Pwee
Thank you FINDarkside, I checked the log and it indeed uses my integrated graphics card. How do I make the game use my dedicated graphics card? Pwee
Thanks for the suggestions. I played around with the graphics setting in the Intel Graphics settings and the AMD Graphics setting. Now I can make TLD use my dedicated graphics card by setting both intel and AMD power play options to maximize performance when plugged in. Unfortunately, when TLD does use my dedicated graphics card I get the black screen on startup issue. I browsed through some of the previous posts on black screen issues and found that support people always suggested to: 1. verify game files (done) 2. make sure drivers are up to date (done) 3. try switching to DX9 version. So I switched to DX9 using the method described here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/305620/discussions/4/517141882711202992/ This seems to work to some extent. Now I can run the program, it uses dedicated card, and it runs smoothly in terms of responsiveness. I still have some issues though: - FPS is still kind of low (16-23, on ultra and medium respectively) - Snow texture keeps shifting around when I move view/camera - Every time I close the program it does not close properly, it says that "tld stopped working" and the windows is looking for solution for the problem. Would it be possible to run the program properly using DX11 somehow? If not, can you help me with the above mentioned minor issues?

Hmm I get this too.. interesting that it might be linked to using DX9 (which I do because otherwise footprints and snow shelters don't render correctly)
