The new fox logo opinion

Recommended Posts

I'm so sad this is happening. I feel like I've not being in sync with the person(s) that do logos/HUD for the game since quite sometimes. I didn't like the new icons proposed ingame, they were always unclear, strangely detailed. I didn't like the new TLD logo, feel too minimalistic and lifeless at the contrary.

And now I've noticed the new Hinterland logo, super sad. I really don't want to offend someone else job, even if I'm sure they have good salary so I hope they will not care about someone talking from far away. But damn it looks cheap, like a firefox logo. Old one was absolutelly beautiful, maybe it's also a ps4 rebrand thing and the same persons did the two I don't know. Super sad.

How do you feel about it? And please don't say "it's just a matter of time we are used to the old". I still don't like the new icons. I know what I like and why.

I actually like both HL logos.

The old one is beautiful due to its numerous details, but I always found the fox's facial expression was somehow a bit sad. The new logo is much less detailed, but it somehow looks more 'active' to me. (Which is probably beneficial if you want it to represent your company). ;)

Long story short: I don't mind the change at all.

The new logo is too minimalist. The old logo had so much detail and distinction, it looked solid and thoughtfully designed. I'm sorry Hinterland, but your new logo just looks too shallow.

i preferred the old one as it was more clean and it had the nostalgia feel to it but most importantly the new logo looks more like a wolf to me and less like a fox.

i will eventually get over it (just let me get through this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Z3lmidmrY) (currently on stage 4)

I don’t dislike the new logo,

But I much prefer the old one - has a lot more detail and not just an outline

Shallow is the right world, it really just feels as a random firefox logo. Also in the name of the company there's the world "land". Can you feel the connection with the land (let alone an hinterland) looking at this new fox? I surelly can't.

The one thing I understand is that the old one didn't really look like a "logo". But then again if you desperetelly want to change do it right. I think that they really need an artist with experience in pixel art or anyway capable of puttin meaningful details in icons.

That's strange, maybe the legs make it more active but in general it looks completelly dead to me. And the sad look of the old one fitted the mood of the game! This one is a blank paper, there's nothing on it. The more aggressivness maybe yes, like a pepsi that wants to be bought. The old one had the illusion of depth, you could wonder about the team/company.

I, too, miss the detail of the old logo. The new one is OK... but I definitely prefer the old.

I really like the new logo. It's perfect. The old logo is too detailed, which can sometimes make it difficult to implement.

The main issue with excessive detail is scalability:

I GIMPed the JPEG of the new logo to convert it to a two tone PNG which reduced the sharpness. I hope you'll forgive that. But as you can see, as the logos are scaled down the detailed old logo looks messier and messier while the simpler new logo retains its discernibility (actually gains sharpness due to the poor quality of my lazy work converting the original to PNG).

Never did like the old logo. I don't know why Hinterlands kept it for so long but I guess they weren't able to hire a graphic designer until now.

Yea, surelly works best as a logo. The old one didn't work that way. I understand that it needed to be changed and simplified.

I liked the old logo. It looked to me as if it was carved in the wood and it was a really good match for this game.

Its looking less like a fox to me, and more like a symbol (a yin-yang?). Maybe they are trying to convey balance with this new logo?

Agreed, I want to say there is a photo of an actual wood carving hinterland had done on their website some where

I don't dislike the new logo, I just liked the old one more.

I think the new logo is better: it looks much more modern and it doesn't have the scaling issues as demonstrated by shade_grey.

Btw.: why are there no foxes in the TLD world? :)

I have to agree.

For legibility and scaleability the new logo is very functional.

I did love the style and charm of the old logo, as it fit into the Long dark aesthetic so perfectly , but if you can make out what it is in small formats then a rethink might be in order.

I say good redesign.

I have mix feeling about.
the new logo is good in that is simple, but it lack character, it does have enough detail to make unique among the others foxes logos.
but I know the old one does scale well to the seal size.
however, it's does not make that big statement about the company.
usually company start with a very, very complex logo, then the are made the simple was possible.
why? to make a shape easy to remember and quickly to recognise.
that's why I like the old one, it's doesn't follow trends, it does follow "the big money" and it's art is not that beautiful, but make clean that Hinterland studios is about the art.
speaking in logos, i have to put my vote in the old one for a simple reason: the new one is not that better, and show you this fun art:

current logo with inverted colours:
v01J2H9F.jpg
Uncaged vol.1 Teaser:
C7jKw3fVAAAN1xQ.jpg

that's right, the first one they have since the company was born.
the second is just a rethink of the logo, used for promotion and as front cover of the Uncaged Vol1 Album.

also, you can look in those links for a bit of background on logos:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox#Branding_and_visual_identity
https://www.logaster.com/blog/firefox-logo/

it's all about packing the most in one punch, but being different is also important.

I like both logos but yeah the more basic in design will work better for all sizes. However i'm not sure why the kept the full round circle effect though? anyways their choice in the end so prb best.

You may got a point for the small logo, but otherwise, the older one, more detailed, more mature one overexposes the new one when it comes to the large side. It just looks 1000x times better than the newer. And on the loading screen, the Forums here, and nearly everywhere else we have the large version of it. Just  when surfing in the forums on small mobiles like mine (S5 mini) the new logo may make the race.

In black and white it looks better imho. At least it doesn't remind me of firefox.

And it's in line with the design of wintermute poster, which I don't especially like by the way. A little bit too toysh.

I personally think they are both great. They each have their use and requirement. The old one would look obviously amazing as a wood carving or even as an embossing on a quality letterhead. Yet the new logo is perfect for merchandise like mugs, pins, flags, clothing labels, anything where it is required to be scaled down in size or seen clearly from a distance.

If i was Hinterland i would use both as and when they needed to. The good thing as they are so similar in their general design that they both could be used without much confusion.

I think they have done great with both :)

I like the old one, especially the animation of it jumping away. But a fresh logo helps for marketing a fresh release of a game.

My first impression of the new Hinterland fox logo is that it looks very "sanitary and corporate."

I much prefer the old, moving fox logo.  Had a nice indie, Indian-style to it and really stood out from other Dev house's logos in my opinion. And I just think the new one looks like {not a nice word} ... kind of the same way I feel about Starbucks.

Of course, I love everything else about Hinterland Studios and the great game that they have made for all of us :)
