I just use the sun.   It rises and sets in consistent spots in every zone: SE to SW.  Ish.  @Patrick Carlson mentioned in a test_branch thread that Hinterland are hoping to fix "which way is south" to be consistent across all zones (the orientation of a couple zones changed when they made the Great Bear Island map).  Other than that, solar navigation works just fine in game.  

Solar navigation works great in RL too.   I occasionally use a compass as well, but I find it's not worth the bother without a map.  (The goal of a compass + map is to find a landmark you can travel to, especially useful when the terrain makes traveling in a straight line impossible.)

And as you can imagine , the work of the compass ? if I'm not mistaken in the compass there be any thing which can fail , like all technology in the game , due to the geomagnetic storms.
