Some weird stuff regarding animals

I am not sure if this is all intended but animals behave like different beast in the current version. Maybe they did longer so but I didn't notice it before:

- Most of the time the "peng" of the rifle does no longer scare wolves away once they begin charging no matter how far away I stand, only when I shoot immediately after I hear the bark do they run off.

- Flares do not scare wolves away either, one was charging at me and I began to "brandish" with my flare. He stopped for a moment, showed me his teeth and then attacked me regardless of the flare which I was continously waving at him. Did I do something wrong? In the previous version I could walk through the Old Island Connector and scare away a wolf three times in a row with a single "brandish" of my torch, I thought flares are supposed to work the same way?

- I was in a fight with a bear and after I recovered I realized that my rifle is gone. I went back to the place where I was attacked (it was on a small rock in Forlorn Muskeg), my blood stain was still there but my rifle not. I searched the ground with the mouse in hope it "dropped" below the snow but nada, the rifle was not to be found.

Is this all as it should be or is something buggy going on?

I think I have seen some post mentioning that you can randomly loose items when fighting a bear. Don't ask me which post that was, because I can't remember. I can't even tell if that is limited to bears only, or if there is also a chance to loose items during a wolf attack. ... What you experienced does at least confirm this mechanic.

Loosing a rifle on the other hand is actually pretty nasty.

I think it would be better if the game would not completely remove an item, but set it to "Ruined". I know that it works this way when clothes get destroyed during a wolf attack. Loosing items should actually work the same.

EDIT - Take a look at the wiki - http://thelongdark.gamepedia.com/Bear
Seems like loosing a rifle during a bear attack has been around for some time.

Most of the time that tactic will work and you will scare the wolf off, but there is a chance it will attack anyway.

This issue has been around for a while now.  I found this thread about it.
