Repair deerskin pants always fails

When I try to repair deerskin pants, the repair always fails. I have the required skin, guts, and sewing kit. The repair screen says that I have an 85% chance of success. But the repair always fails, without exception, and I lose the materials.

I am able to repair non-crafted clothing without any problems.

However, I don't know whether I would have this same problem when trying to repair other crafted clothing, as I have not tried it yet because I don't want to lose the materials.
