New Scrap Metal Source?

I was just playing the test build and this is not anyway test build related or specific but I noticed an empty can of peaches on the counter and had a thought that had never crossed my mind before. I know that we can't pick them up or move them, but why can't we harvest empty cans and soda cans for scrap metal since you will eventually run out? This could simply be a balancing thing but I'm just curious to see if y'all would like to see this mechanic added or if not. If not, would you would like to be able to pick these items up and place them in containers to make them disappear since they are likely ruined in order to clean up a room?

Scrap metal is infinite. You find a bunch of it while beachcombing.
