Hunger/Thirst meter

I think the current system works best actually. A simple press of a button gets me all my status bars and the screen itself is devoid of any HUD which really helps immersion.

I love the survival stats feature, but the point the OP is eating.   If you're already looking at your Food inventory, you have to

  1. close your inventory
  2. press the survival stats button
  3. memorize your hunger & thirst numbers
  4. reopen inventory
  5. click the Food tab
  6. choose something to eat based on how well you memorized in step 3

Only then can you eat/drink.  It's a LOT of user interface interaction that could be avoided  if the hunger/thirst meters were always shown on the food tab.

@FatheriatorCZ  Since you can't move, fight, etc. while looking at your inventory I feel this is exactly the right place for detailed information to be shown, especially when it eliminates user interface tedium as enumerated above.  I agree with you that keeping the UI minimal for action and exploration is top priority.

I know plenty of gamers don't care about user interface clunkiness, but I think it's something Hinterland cares about so I'll post a picture of the proposal: show the very same meters we already see while eating.  Make them visible whenever the Food tab of the inventory is selected.

Sure.

Before  (no way to tell what your hunger/thirst is without closing your inventory)

After -- hunger / thirst meters always show when on the Food tab of the inventory.  Not on other inventory tabs.

I agree - these basic stats should also be visible in the inventory screen (for better overview and management).

Speaking of a better overview... I would also add the Fatigue meter to the inventory screen. I think many of us are micro-managing their avatars/inventory to be in a very good shape and to use the (scarce) resources effectively. Thus, having all the basic stats in one place and easily accessible could help a lot.

or mabye make them placed instead of the temperature meter because you dont need to know the temperature when you are eating you only need it when you are choosing clothes. It would fit nicely into the space there and could be made with even a percentage of how much you are thirsty/hungry for better choosing what to eat/drink.

I would also like to be able to view my stats while in my inventory.... can't really understand why it wasn't done by default. I understand the whole minimalist UI idea, but if I've already got my backpack taking up the screen and ruining the scene, then why not just give me all the useful information available to me?

Since this post I have been looking at it while playing.  When you eat, your hunger meter comes up and when you drink they both come up.

So, the way they have it now, they have more scripting going on to make this happen then if they were to just put it on the UI for the inventory.  This would be fairly easy to implement.

+1 for this change

While we're on the topic of the health status UI, I'd be in favour of removing the calorie numbers altogether from the UI, and just give you the the descriptions. The game could allow you to go slightly above 2500 Cal, and refuse to let you eat if you're full, but just not tell you the precise amount.

Being told by the UI that you are peckish/hungry/starving is much more immersive than having a magical Cal-o-meter built into your eyes.

Darn, I wish I had one of those cal-o-meters in real life!

I'd like to see more of a penalty for starving. Nothing prevents me from doing any tasks when my calorie store is at zero. In fact, there's nothing really dangerous in game about starving to death right now. It is a pretty slow health decline, and all you need is the occasional cat tail stalk to stave that condition loss off. Though your health goes down faster when you are dehydrated. I would like the Hunger/Thirst meters to play a bigger role when they get down in the red zone. :orange_soda:

I personally think it's okey, because in real life you can actually survive a long while without food. Not so much without water. Dehydratation should have ailments, i agree. Fever for example and it should probably slow you down, maybe hallucinations. For food we could faint for something like a minute maybe for lack of it when we are in the red zone, nothing that last too much so we don't freeze to death, but that minute could be dangerous if we are near animals.

You wouldnt faint from a calorie store of 0, the bar is based on 2500 cal a day, so when youre "starving" you actually just skipped a day of food. This should only really cause fatigue and irritability.

Starvation Fatigue could slowly lower your max energy and stamina, eventually causing you to be weak and bedridden.

So skipping a day of food isnt a big deal unless you were super active.

Having the ability to make the bars go in the negatives could give us a better idea on whats going on. And having the ends of the bars greyed out when the max Stat is reduced could be implemented as well.

It is completely possible to faint, when the glucose levels drop after not eating for even a few hours faiting can become a possibility. I have plenty of classmate through the years fainting in class because they went to school without eating breakfast, I would go and suppose a person in TLD could have this too. It's specially more possible if you have been doing something hard in the physical sense and one hasn't been eating (could be a thing if you are straining yourself. I don't mean faiting for hours, but it would be interesting to faint for a minute or two if you starve. It wouldn't freeze you to death but would be dangerous if you are near animals.
