Since the game isn't going to be centered around crafting (it will be part of the game though) and building things harvesting resources only makes sense in the context of keeping your gear in good condition. Say you just take your axe and walk up to a tree and chop the tree a few times with each chop effecting the graphics of the tree to represent another cut into it, then after a minute or two of that the tree drops.
