Hopeless Rescue time discrepancies

I hada weird issue in the Hopeless Rescue challenge with the decreasing timer. At one point I was on top of Timberwolf Mountain and my timer seems to have been reset to like 6 days and some hours. In another playthrough of that challenge, the timer was suddenly 13 days and some hours.  Then I eventually got to the lighthouse, and the moment I equipped the flair gun (still inside the lighthouse interior) it suddenly said 'challenge failed' (or something like that) and it was over.

I don't know if any of this is intentional or if it really is a bug. Either way, it felt very strange and confusing.
