UI for wood harvesting

Problem:

Alright, some of those wood items outside take way too long to harvest, especially by hand.

Solution?

Alright, I know you can choose how much of what you want on a deer carcass to fit whatever window of time you have to harvest, and when crafting you can take multiple sessions, but  you have to break wood down completely in one session as of now. Maybe we could implement the crafting/skinning mechanic onto them? (Which means different UI) And have a new model of log to show its been partly harvested (axe marks?).

Probably an axe for cutting whole trees! Solving by the way some (very) late game wood shortage

Wood shortage? All limbs do respawn. The timers are long but they will regenerate over time.

More specificially (example ), i dont want to spend a whole hour breaking down a wooden crate by hand for multiple pieces, i want to choose how many pieces i want, to shorten the time and leave the rest there.

I like that. Mirrors what you'd do in real life too. Sometimes you just don't want to (or can't) harvest the entire tree

Oh? So maybe it was a bug but on one of my friend's main run, after a 200-ish of days he struggled to find wood on Coastal Highway, maybe a bug?

I don't think so, you just need to find the right areas that tend spawn the most logs / branches and sticks. Some places seem to spawn lot more than others atm. I guess any forest area type would be higher. then who knows - no doubt will change again in alpha play.

i'm not sure I like this idea, it may make it too micro management. sheesh it doesn't take too long to cut a log with an axe atm, what 10 minutes game time/ few seconds realtime? and you get erm 3 logs to burn and maybe a bonus starter.

hrm you didn't say what items by the way? I presume you mean crates or similar? you can still use your axe to make it quicker. else don't break them down until you find one :) there are many other ways of getting wood.

Yes, that does seem odd. I tend to camp in the Camp Office and just across the railroad tracks was a spot that would spawn 1-2 cedar limbs every 5 days or so. I guess it may be dependent on where in the coastal highway your friend was staying.

Alright, I get your point, maybe if you have no tools in your inventory itll show up, cause im having trouble finding enough wood for the first night in timberwolf Mountain. And an hour harvesting a crate would kill me in most cases.

If your clothing is marginal, then the caves of Timberwolf are warmer than the mountain hut. There is enough wood lying around to build small fires in order to warm up every few game hours (~15 minutes play-time). It's best to heat a beverage or peaches or beans for the warmth boost that gives. The shortest sleep or pass time interval seems to be an hour however the camp fire now gives little security from roaming wolves or bears.

I always felt it was a better strategy to stop periodically and build a fire for warmth rather than pushing through in a marathon effort to reach the next building or shelter. Sometimes on those shelters, if the warmth bonus is not enough to get you above freezing, you can build a fire just outside and the warmth seems to radiate in. Works for cars or at least it used to.
