Scyzara
"will" and "want" are false friends in German/English (will=werden, want=wollen). "I will" means "Ich werde", "I want" means "Ich will". You thus probably mean you want a tallow candle. (Just saying this to prevent any misunderstandings.) The same is true for become and get, btw. "to become sth." means "(zu) etwas werden", "to get sth." means "etwas bekommen". False friends can be quite confusing sometimes.^^ @topic: I'm all for candles in general (as immobile long-term light sources for your base), but I would rather prefer to simply find premade ones. hauteecolerider
@Axtos I have to admit that at first your original comment had me blinking in confusion. Then I figured you meant "I want, I want!" Don't blame you about the tallow candles - many are the times I've wished for one, especially when I was in the PV Farmhouse back in the v.302 days when the place was so dark . . . @Scyzara I think your English is pretty darn good. As I said before, I was surprised to learn that it is not your primary language (I thought it was the other way around). And nice job explaining the differences between English and German terms. I learned something myself, too (about German, not English). As a deaf person who did not come to language until I was already three years old, I have always struggled with the spellings and the sounds. I learned in high school German class that English is one of the least phonetically spelled languages in the world, simply because it is a bastard language. Huge chunks of it are Saxon/Germanic in origin, with large swathes of Latin/Romance terms, mutated Gaelic/Celtic words, and lots of borrowed terms from other language families. There is no rhyme or reason in pronunciation vs. spelling. So for all of you for whom English is not your primary language, my hat's off to you for even trying to use it ... Your English (at least written) is easily as good as mine Also, thanks to you and @Axtos it seems that we've also learned a little German today! (If it's any consolation @Axtos German just looks like gibberish to me )
Scyzara
Thanks @hauteecolerider and @cekivi. Should you happen to see any grammar mistakes or odd word choices of mine, I would very much appreciate it if you told me about it (e.g. via PM). You would really do me a great favor as I'm always trying to improve my English to become more confident (and less anxious) at conferences. Unfortunately, most native English speakers I come across in real life are just too polite to correct me if I make a mistake (even if it's a horrible one and they have no clue what I'm trying to say! xD) which makes it quite difficult for me to improve myself. Guess I probably need to move to Canada (or possibly New Zealand/Tasmania) for a few years to get some more practice once I've finished my PhD. ^^

Lots of beautiful colours, warm days, cool nights and no bugs! It's an excellent time of year for day hiking and doing tourist type things. On topic, it would be nice to have a renewable light source. +

EternityTide
+1, but on the stipulation that tallow can only be produced by processing meat (perhaps by refining fat which is given off as a byproduct of cooking meat) The Inuit, traditionally, lit their igloos with raw seal fat lamps - the traditional lamp being compromised of a shallow carved stone dish, filled with raw seal blubber - harvested straight from the seal carcass - which is then ignited to produce a low level flame. This isn't possible with meats such as deer, bear and wolf, because they are too lean - there's more water and muscle fibre than the fat you need for a candle light. My envisioning of how the system works is that an additional slot is added to the fire UI - this would be for a drip tray, which can be made from scrap metal or found in various locations. The player will then be able to empty the drip tray each session, and animal fat will appear in the player's inventory. Animal fat will then have to be boiled to refine it - in truth, refining fat into tallow is a tad more complicated, but this is a game, not a simulator - and player will then find Tallow in their inventory. Tallow can be used in various ways, not just as candles. It can be used as a slightly inferior, but renewable accelerant, it can be used to seal leather boots, slowing their degradation, and as an emergency food (disgusting as it is). Tallow, unfortunately, is solid at low temperatures (it is defined as a fat, as opposed to an oil, as oils are liquid at room temperature) and so cannot be used to fuel kerosene lantern, however I believe that players should be able to cannibalise the kerosene lantern and, with the aid of high quality tools and a work bench, craft a candle lantern, which has a slightly different texture, featuring a candle inside instead of an oil wick. A tallow candle lantern would be something to see. Not to mention make a really neat (if low light) addition to the game. I guess the alternative is to make an old fashioned candle lantern from scrap metal and a box of tools. After all, you just need some way to make a weatherproof enclosure to keep your candle (tallow or otherwise) burning and let the light out. Glass would be way better though. Perhaps a combination of both?
