another idea for an alternate light source

so i'm watching Life Below Zero at the moment. and this guy made his own lamp by using a small plate, moose fat and moss. he just put the moss in the middle of the plate, poured the liquid fat around the moss, and lit the moss on fire. the moss soaks up the fat and acts as a candle.

i've mentioned having candles before as an alternate light source. as in, candles found in cabinets and on bed stands. but this would give us a chance to craft this item as well. this candle would blow out with wind, and would be a one-use item, given the ability to craft more when needed :)

Interesting idea, finding moss would be something that's only possible once seasons are implemented though I fear.

What about this: Take an empty can (where do those go anyway?), fill it with rags aka cloth. Melt animal fat and ignore the smell, pour it and light it on fire. Should be held by the bottom and is, naturally, single use although the can could be reused a couple of times. When I'm LARPing (post-apocalyptic, btw) a friend of mine uses a similar contraption as a stove, but it does emit a fair amount of light, definitely worse than an actual storm lantern or a torch or even a candle, but way better than a sad, single match.

life below zero is all about homesteaders (well, one guy is a dog trainer) in an environment just like The Long Dark's. so if that guy was able to find some, we should be able to :P but your idea sounds like it'd give off much more light, than a makeshift moss candle :)
