Forest Fires, Climbing Trees, and New Wildlife

I have a lot of ideas about the game. The main ones are adding climbing of trees/new birds, new wildlife, and a possible new challenge mode or general addition to the game.

1. If you guys succeed in doing the changing seasons within the game, I was thinking we could add forest fires in the summer. There are already burnt down buildings which suggests there were fires earlier on. These forest fires might burn down some of the buildings that are currently up thus causing an extra challenge after Summer is over. This might burn down your hidden/saved supplies in the wooden houses as well. This might even be added as a challenge round so you could be in the middle of the forest somewhere, and have to get to a cave or the dam in mystery lake in order to survive the forest fire. Possible falling, burning tree limbs could be an added danger, giving you burns that might slow you down.

2.Going off of the multiple seasons, for more long lasting gamers, I was thinking we could add in the ability to climb trees and find bird eggs from different types of birds (Eagle, owl, crow, robins, hawks, Canadian geese, Ducks) and each egg type would have different weights thus different calories. With more birds in the game we might be able to shoot and eat them. Shooting crows for instance would give us crow feathers for arrows. Different birds could be available in different seasons. For geese and ducks we could shoot them on the water possibly. Canadian Geese are pretty heavy, so they might provide a lot of meat. Ducks also are just tasty in general.

3. Going off of tree climbing we could also add knot holes into trees where wither bird or squirrel nest could be hidden. These knot holes could also be a place for nuts if squirrels or chipmunks hid them. Squirrels could also be caught in snares.

4. I really look forward to the idea of being able to use the canoes, I was wondering if maybe and or craft fishing rods in order to fish in the spring summer and fall.

5. Maybe add the Hinterland's fox. This might be rare to find, but it would be a nice addition for us lovers of the game. Possibly, this could even serve as a companion/pet throughout the game to keep our mental health up? I know mental health is one thing they wanted to incorporate, so having/playing with a pet might remedy that. If not, we could still shoot it for meat and possibly creating a less hot coat for warmer seasons.

Let me know your thoughts on any of these!:)

I kinda got impression that those burned down buildings are result of panic that followed Event. They are 2 neat, 2 "fresh" looking.

I dont know how things are in Canada, but around here most forest fires are result of human negligence, so no people (almost)no problem. Plus, player probably wouldnt survive forest fire.

1-I think that the fire you're talking about would be caused by the Aurorae. And there isn't a lot of forest fires around Canada.

2- I think that they will add some more resources related to birds in the future.

3- Not really into that idea, but who knows what the developers are thinking!

4- I'm also very excited for dem canoez.

5- They already have their logo on the coffee mug, but adding an actual hinterland's fox feels a little bit overboard. But we might have a re-skin model if foxes are implemented in the game.

Yeah, maybe if forest fires are mainly man-made, if we make fires outside in the Summer, it might have a high risk of starting a forest fire? Also, in a challenge mode, if they make one, they could maybe have the animation start with us starting a fire, going to bed, and waking up next to the start of a forest fire somewhere, then we'd have t make it to the dam in mystery lake or a cave somehow. If they add horses, maybe we could find a horse to try and race to one of those places before we die.

It's funny you should say that when a certain town is burning to the ground. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=87992&src=eorss-iotd

Thanks for having my back, bro! But also, do you know if these were man-made or just natural occurrences? I know ways that forest fires can start without human interference includes a lightening strike, hot winds, or even just the sun. Maybe those could be causes of just natural forest fires in the game without us making fires outside?

Haha ya funny to say Canada doesnt have have forest fires. Both my brother are forest fire fighters and they have seen some crazy stuff.

Great point about new wildlife, I feel like this could be a dedicated thread discussion. Cougar please!?

As for season change I would have to respectfully disagree. Summer just wouldn't feel right in this game, plus it would be a lot of work from the Devs. Let's just say the Aurora has set about a never ending winter...matches them theme and could be logically integrated with the geomagnetic disaster, let's say the earths revolution is all messed up.

Forest fires would be near, but not active ones in my opinion, just the latent effects. Let's say the RNG on one play through decided to burn down all the buildings and trees in mystery lake, good luck surviving.

Cougars are in the development roadmap, and so is seasonal change. It's not certain, but quite likely that both will make it into the game somewhere down the line (along with a shedload of other stuff!) - cougars being sooner, I think.

Good looking roadmap for the game. Thanks Pillock and Hinterlands. I still have mixed feelings about seasonal changes. I feel TLD's true roots are in winter survival. Not that it is a bad idea and won't be fun but it seems like it will be lots of work from the Devs that could be focused elsewhere.

Can't wait for NPC in sandbox! Gets lonely out there.

From reading the roadmap, it looks to me as though the initial implementation of the Spring Sandbox will stand alone from the Winter one: so we probably won't get transitions between seasons right away - you'd just choose winter or spring to play your whole game in.

That would allow the designers to give springtime its own challenges and difficulties separate from the ones winter offers without having to worry about balancing the two together - at least to start with, anyway. I think it's a very exciting prospect, personally.

To address forest fires they do occur naturally. While the bad ones near settlements are more likely to be a result of neglectful campers lightning strikes routinely start several fires in remote areas over the summer. Usually they can be controlled to steer them away from town and villages. The fire outside Fort Mac just got too big too quickly and overwhelmed the guys on the ground. To give them credit though, the Fort Mac fire department was able to save 80% of the town including all of the municipal infrastructure.
