Double Barrel Shotgun.

I still haven't played TLD yet but I've heard through a YouTube video that when a bear charges you, you're pretty much up dookie creek without a paddle as they do massive damage.

Maybe introducing a double barrel shotgun (12 Gauge Side by Side) to unload on your attacker could help fend off these attacks.

Maybe it wouldn't kill the animal right away...they could still bleed out over time, but it might improve your chances of an instant kill since the bears are so close in proximity to the player upon charging.

Make the shotgun and ammo very rare so you can't just use it constantly as an exploit to take down wolves.

Too much ammunition would make close ranged wildlife encounters such as the wolf, bear, deer, or mountain lions a lot easier to survive and this may not be a good thing as far as balancing the game.

If we do get mountain lions in a future update, they should also be very fast and stealthy.

A shotgun could counter their speed and stealth by having a weapon in-game that would allow firing a spread of buckshot right before they pounce on you.

Just an idea folks!!!

It seems like shotguns are actually a pretty common choice as a bear gun in Alaska when loaded with 3-inch magnum slugs.

See: http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/gun-nuts/2013/05/loaded-bear-choosing-shotgun-and-shell-combo-alaska

I think Revenant probably had in mind the buckshot load exclusively as an "oh sh*t" solution that could be whipped out instantly without the need for precise aim.  Two simultaneous 00 magnum buck shells to the face might not kill a bear instantly, but it would definitely do more than get its attention.  There would be very little left of a wolf head.

While I like the idea of a shotgun with rare ammo, I get the impression that this role has already been filled by the distress pistol, so I won't be holding my breath for its inclusion.  :(

I've thought for a while that a shotgun would be useful for shooting rabbits (never tried shooting one with the rifle or bow, because they are too fast and I am a rotten shot). Birds, too, if they were added as 'interactable' animals.

I'd have no objection to the addition of shotguns, as long as the inventory conditions discourage players from running about with an arsenal of different guns at all times.

Personally, I'd rather have a .22LR in the game for rabbit hunting :)

You're not quite screwed if you come across a bear. You have two options. First, with a torch, brand or flare you can brandish the bear to make it pause and give you time to get away. Failing that, the emergency flare - which is super rare and only found in one location - will spook a charging bear. It was one of the notes in the Timberwolf mountain update that the only protection from a charging bear is the emergency flare. The trick is getting it... :geek:

And remembering to load it. I got mauled despite having one because I forgot to load the silly thing! :crying:

Lastly, the rifle will work to stop a bear... sometimes. Rifle headshots have a percent chance to instantly kill an animal. If you have nerves of steel (and a fast trigger finger) you can repeatedly shoot the bear in the head as it charges. If you're lucky, you'll eventually get the killing shot (if I remember right it's 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 odds). Otherwise... well, you get to have a nice bear hug :silly:

Amen to this!  Bulk ammo-finds make more sense when they're useless for any other purpose. A dozen at a time doesn't sound too unbalanced, since it would net around the same amount of calories as a rifle bullet brings from a deer.

You forgot my preferred two-step option:

1) Soil trousers

2) ESC + Quit

Don't forget, you can (barely) survive a bear attack. You'll be in really bad shape but how you deal with it makes for some very engaging gameplay. I would encourage you to scavenge up some Emergency Stims though. If your two step method ever gets stuck on part 1 you'll want something to give your character so that you have a fighting chance to survive :)

So that's where your avatar comes from :D

Good tips for a noobie like me. Finding that flare gun will be top priority before my TLD gaming session turns into a "The Revenant" style Country Bear Jam-Bah-Roo. Haha!!!

My method of surviving a bear attack would look something like this.

#1 - See Yogi Bear.

#2 - Throw this: :jerky:

#3 - Run like Hell.

#4 - Whine about lost Jack Links.

:P

Im yet to see bear spawn in some ambushy area. They are usually in the open.

So when i go for bear i try to have one of the following:

1. Somewhere to hide nearby, like car or building. So that i would get there be4 bear gets to me.

2. Superior ground. Animal pathfinding is finicky, so climbing on a cliff(or on a fallen tree) and then take well aimed shot from there works quite well.

3. Or already mentioned, using bait. For some alogical reason animal prefers that piece of meat over you in most cases. Having exit strategy is important.

Hunting with fire is for lamers.
