Finite Light

Salty Crackers

Now that torches are non-renewable, all light sources except the brand are non-renewable. This will be a problem in the late game, because they cannot reliably have light in dark places. Could you let us make a natural torch with sticks and birch bark? It would have the same burn time as a brand, but could be turned on and off. You would probably have to find a way to balance it, though.

It's time for another new item... candles!! :)

Candle is extinguished by the slightest breeze and gives off very little light, so it's unfit for use outdoors. But... it lasts. Oh, I want candles sooo bad to make my base cozy! Make light a prerequisite for crafting/repairing and give us candles...

Candles: an item requested for close to a year now on the forums if not more :)

Commercial wax candles lying about in homes aside, making your own candles would require quite a bit of materials:

1. Jars or cans

2. Wicks

3. Processed animal fat (for instance: "tallow")

See for instance: how to make tallow candles.

It would take quite a bit of procedure and material (cloth, containers) to process the fat, actually: chopping it up, boiling and straining to get rid of the impurities.

It would give you something to do; except if you do it at night you'd burn candles just to make more candles. Although if they'd allow for antique storm lanterns in the game, it would make sense to carry candles into caves.

Short term development wise though, it would probably make more sense to enable players to siphon off gasoline from car tanks with a rubber hose.

If you can make candles and fit them in storm lanterns, it would be possible to take them outside. But then, we'd still run out of matches.

True, but according to the development roadmap, Hinterland intends to implement bow drill firecraft into the game at some point, so long term it shouldn't be an issue.

For now, there are a lot of matches in the game + fire steel + magnifying glass (if all else fails and the weather is sunny).

I love the idea of the rare candle, or craftable candles if all items for making them are in game ;)

I like the brands a lot. I used to abuse the heck out of instant torches but the brand is a good balance.

I strongly believe we should be able to make campfires in a cave to allow making enough brands to get us through mines if we don't have a lantern, torch, etc.

I have not personally tested whether you can light fires in mines but I can assure you that you can light fires in caves. A cave fire to warm up and make a brand so I can see to escape has saved my bacon more than once

Thank you very much for the info :)
I mistyped and wrote "cave" when I meant to write "mine."  Oops!:$

I thought I we can't start fires in mines because when I first started TLD in December and I tried lighting a fire "indoors" I'd see the "Cannot light fires indoors" message. Specifically this was right inside the door of Carter Dam and I just assumed the mines would be the same since it's "technically" indoors.

Oooh, sweet. I didn't know they have a roadmap. Gonna look it up
