Death Match w/ Bear questions maybe Spoilers

I just have a couple questions about the Bear Challenge.

1. From what I've read by other people's posts, I get the impression we are supposed to spawn with the flare gun is this correct? If so, I have tried this challenge several times and never have I had the flare gun on hand.
2. This brings me to the next question, each time I spawn, I spawn in the clutches of the nasty ole bear in the process of mauling me, leaving me for dead at 9% and bleeding/dying. Is this correct? I ask only because I got the impression from some other posts that this was not the case.
3. Every time I survive the initial mauling and try to limp away to some sort of safety where I can regroup, I take 2-3 steps away in the opposite direction of the bear only to be pounced on by a Wolf waiting nearby. This of course ends it for me, so I am wondering if this is something others have encountered too? As it is now I can either run towards the Bear or away from the bear in either case I get attacked either by the Wolf or the Bear. My other solution to this point has been to jump off the ledge nearby but I have survived this jump only once and died very shortly thereafter.
