Hold spacebar, move mouse for select category, click, move mouse for select action, click

I don't think the new radial menu creates more button presses than the previous menu screens; but I don't think it's reduced it much either - it just looks different.

For example, when you've heated up some tinned food on a fire, you still have to exit the fire screen, then press space, then click backpack, then click the food category, then mouse-over the various tins you might have to see which one you've just cooked, then select it, then click 'eat'.

I know there are changes in the works for how cooking is represented, so perhaps this is going to be addressed later on in development. But. We currently get an icon appear in the fire screen to show when something is finished cooking - it would be great if that icon came with an 'eat' or 'drink' button right there: one click instead of six, and no tedious menu navigation.

Another example is clothes: when we find food, for example, we can 'Take', 'Eat' or 'Leave' the item: this is good. If this simple mechanic were extended to clothes - so we could 'Take', 'Wear' or 'Leave' them (rather than just 'Take' or 'Leave' currently), we then wouldn't have to go into the inventory when we find a new clothing upgrade.

Streamlining the amount of time we spend in the menus is really important for me. The inventory management controls are probably the only thing I dislike about The Long Dark - the game itself is brilliant! I'm still getting used to the new radial menu system, admittedly, but so far the things I didn't like about the old one are still an issue with the new one.

Ideally, I would like to be able to customize hotkeys for ALL inventory actions, from placing snares to taking a swig of water to sharpening or repairing tools. But even the ability to customize the categories in the radial menu would be a good start.

Using the mouse is very normal for people who are using a PC. Using the spacebar is also very normal to people who are using a PC. I think there are other issues that are far more important to address when it comes to improving the game

Actually, I am playing this game on a Mac. I much prefer the keyboard for menu navigation, as it is much quicker for me.

Tab through the options, Return to select, arrow keys to move quantities up/down; couldn't be simpler. I do this all the time in the Elder Scrolls menus. Wish I could do the same in the TLD menus. Then it wouldn't be as much an issue to click through all the options.
