Map and Compass

Maybe I have not played long enough to get good at remembering where I am in the game, but I would love to find a compass and a notebook so I can make a map. It could update automatically or more realistically require that I "make a note" to record my recent movements. It should not record map info if there is a blizzard because I can't see where I am going or where I came from. But later, I could use the compass to navigate in limited sight conditions using my hand made map.

I have gotten to the point now of making some notes myself. Having the game let me do this in-character would be cool.

The compass could be a nice addition, but I rather like not having a map that auto-updates.  It forces me to remember landmarks, which helps immersion, imo.  If the game gave the option to draw your own map, then I would be for that.

Just in case you missed it, you can already make notes in the game, by bringing up your inventory, navigating to the journal tab and then switching to the notes page.

I just drop tinder plugs or sticks to mark a trail you want. if you drop them close enough you will never get lost in a blizzard.

Saying that though the more you explore the maps and play more, you get to know where to go and you will find it's not needed as much.

Yeah, I thought about both but I don't think a compass would work as we're the middle of a Geomagnetic storm, one which would presumably make compasses either not work or work incorrectly.

In regards to the map, even though there are some great user-made maps out there, I personally consider the use of those maps as spoiling the fun of exploration and finding things out for myself. That said, I do refer to them sometimes if I need to remember something; my memory hasn't always been the best. What I think would work best in TLD's case is a map that reveals the areas that I explore, kinda like how Minecraft does it in Adventure mode: the more you explore, the more you reveal. What we can add to it is the ability for players to label areas and customize the map in some regards.

Its amazing, ppl wannt working electricity, yet are absolutely sure that compasses wouldnt work in LD conditions.

It takes far far far less em interference to burn out circuitry than to screw up compass to a degree that would render it unusable. And once electrical appliances are gone, they are gone, burned out, toast, unrecoverable without parts replacement. Yet compass has no parts that rely on electrical current.

Depends on what the effects of the storm are: did they mess up the Earth's magnetic fields? If so, then - speaking from a layman's perspective - I would assume compasses would be affected, probably adversely.

If Event affected Earths magnetic field(and continue to do so) severely, then compass would be affected(severity depends on a number of factors as well). But magnitude of disturbance that would be required for that would also create an emp that would fry circuitry.

On the other hand, if it wasnt that strong and not all electronics were burned out, then how it had such devastating effect ?

Its one or another.

Il get back to my old rant - i wannt topographic map of the region on which player can place markers, both automatic, for found locations, and manual. Just map, not automap, no player location or direction indicator, just map. With addition to compass.

I just want to be able to make trail signs.  (something other than leaving scarves on the ground eventually you run out of scarves) Its low tech and has been used eons.

I use flares that I already lit. I point them on the directions i need to remember. I don't know if used flares have other uses, but that's what I use them for. They are bright red so they stand out.

thats a good idea - I'll have to remember it.

I think there should be maps in game, but not traditional game maps. For example at the camp office at Mystery Lake there should be a camp ground style map of the park. It wouldn't have loot locations necessarily, but just the paths and basic layout of the lake. Maybe have it displayed on the wall and you can cut it down with a knife and carry it folded. At stores on coastal highway and in pleasant valley, maybe you could find road maps of the region. These would have the roads, city names, and perhaps landmarks of note - but no other useful information for survival.

Compass seems like a no-brainer. Game supposes a geomagnetic event occured, as in past tense. If it's still going on that's fine, and it might make compasses bug out during storms for example, but we should be given something to allow us to mark and make our own maps easily. I also really like the idea of being able to use knives to mark trees. That would solve a lot of these problems. Anything but a traditional game map that helps people make maps. Not everyone is gifted with spatial awareness skills.
