Player Spawn Locations

I just started a new game and was suprised when I spawned / started inside a cabin.

Wow I thought that was nice :) first time that has happened to me. Usually I get spawned somewhere out in the middle of no where with a blizzard.

don't you just hate when that happens?

now, have you ever tried to spawn in a specific location on purpose?  I am curious if there is a player spawn point at Eric's Falls on the TWM map, 'cause if there was, you'd be two ropes away from the summit and wouldn't that be like getting your birthday present early!

on the other hand,  One run, I wanted to find the elusive armory prepper cache on the Mystery Lake map, it took me twenty six launches before it finally appeared and I have never seen it since that one game... and believe me I check for that bunker every time I play the ML map

In one of my very first ever games I spawned inside the radio tower thing above Pleasant Valley. It had everything: insulated boots, winter coat, MREs and other food, rifle, ammo, snares, knife, hatchet. It was the first time I'd ever seen some of these items and I got them with no effort at all.

At first I was pretty chuffed, but then I thought, "Hang on, I thought I just crashed my plane into the wilderness? Why am I waking up here?"

I think indoor spawns probably ought to be removed, really.

Indoor spawnpoints in Pilgrim and Voyageur mode were introduced a long time ago as part of a package of changes supposed to "widen the difficulty gap" between Voyageur and Stalker mode. They are meant to make the game a little easier for Voyageur players by giving them a good start. In Stalker, you'll never spawn indoors.:winky:

I understand your point about indoor spawns being immersion breaking, but keep in mind that we will most likely start on a completely different new map (with Mackenzie's crashed plane) in Story mode anyway. The spawn point immersion problem thus only affects the sandbox.

It might be a workaround for you to imagine your character got a severe concussion during the crash, suffers from amnesia and simply doesn't remember any more how he/she stumbled through the forest until he/she reached the house you are in now. It's not a perfect explanation for sure, but better than none.^^

Or you can borrow my head cannon: you're not playing Will Mackenzie. You're playing one of the other poor fools who survived the apocalypse

The times I spawn in a blizzard in the middle of the night offer some really interesting gameplay.  When I spawn inside a building I usually restart.

100% agree. I once spawned at 5:00 AM lost in a blizzard on Mystery Lake. I was stumbling around in circles until I found the ruined cabin in the dead fall. I was able to light a small fire and stay alive long enough to see daylight and make a break for safety once I could see! It was touch and go for that first day but it was certainly exciting!

I *never* play as Will Mackenzie. :winky:

Yeah, me neither. Always choose the female character as I like her voice acting better.

I just mentioned Will because the introduction screen says something along the lines of "your plane just crashed in the Canadian wilderness". Maybe Hinterlands should change the wording a little to avoid confusion about indoor spawns.^^

That's "Fem Shep" otherwise known as Jennifer Hale. I also always play a female character in the Long Dark for that reason: I prefer her voice acting style

Wow, didn't know it was Jennifer Hale!  I always play as female for the voice acting too.

Yes it is. It was in one of the early announcements for the game. If you're a Bioware fan, the male character is voiced by Mark Meer

Armory bunker? Hmm.  What's in that one? Bunches of hatchets and knives?

I switch up whether I'm playing male or female survivor as I like different aspects of both their performances.

My favourite line is Mark Meer's sprained ankle quote "Mmph.. Smarts a bit!" I haven't heard anyone say "That smarts" since the early nineties and it always makes me chuckle.

Armory bunker or prepper cache located on the ridge above the camp office on Mystery Lake,  in the past always contained at least two rifles and a significant amount of ammunition in addition to a hatchet and a hunting knife.  It usually also had some water and a couple of food items but not much else.  I did recently manage recently to get it to spawn prior to the update, but it only contained two rifles in both near ruined condition, 3 rounds of ammo, a knife, a cleaning kit and 3 .5l bottles of water.  not the usual "armory" haul, had more of a "forgotten" feel to it than a prepper cache would have.

I'm still of the opinion that the prepper caches would make more sense as abandoned Cold War bunkers due to their state of disrepair.

Still, it'd be neat to find one fully stocked with clear signs of a person or family living in it. Then you'd be left with the decision to loot, ask for help, or disappear before they find you.

Maybe in Story mode!
