Add More Wildlife

To make this process easier, just add animals that share the same characteristics as the animals you already have in the game, that way you would just need to create the animal skins. For starters...

Moose, Elk and Caribou all share similar characteristics to the deer, and they are all native to Canada. So could you create these 3 skins and put them on top of your deer build? It would expand the wildlife a lot.

The brown bear is similar to the black bear you have in your game. Throwing a brown coat on your bear build would add another animal. Also, Grizzlies and polar bears are native to Canada too.

These are just animal skins being added to the deer and bear build, so it shouldn't be too hard. It would add so much variety to the game's limited wildlife. You can tweak the behaviour and characteristics of these animals individually in the future if you want. That is, if you want to make them all slightly different. For example...

- Moose can be rare to see, but you can get a lot of meat?

I hope you like my idea, and consider it for the future.

Here you go: http://hinterlandgames.com/the-long-dark/roadmap/

Edited highlights:

Wow, thank you for the info. The plans they have in place far exceeded my expectations. I thought most of these things would be impossible to add, but this game is going to be incredible. It's amazing right now, but damn. Horses are one thing...but Full season transition? What other game does that? lol Bravo Hinterland. My hats off to you. I'm glad I pre-ordered this game. I just hope this game gets a full release eventually. A lot of early access games never get there.

Apart from moose and cougars (which are already on the roadmap), I would very much favor the addition of a small predator/scavenger. Nothing that might actually attack the player unprovoked, rather an animal whose gameplay purpose is to steal snared rabbits or minor amounts of unharvested meat from carcasses every now and then.

Foxes are probably the best candidates for the job I have in mind. They might hunt rabbits and occasionally steal 0,5-1,5kg of meat if they find a carcass. Maybe they could even get a little agressive if you try to chase them away from said carcass. However, most of the time they would just avoid you and run away if you approach them. More or less like Pilgrim mode wolves, just without the ability to take down deer.

I would also love them to be nocturnal and only visible/huntable during nights. A little incentive to leave your base at night every now and then might add to the game imo.

the most important thing about his idea is that we be able to craft headgear from the hide. Then we can make rubbish jokes, such as:

"I'm going to walk over to Katie's Secret Corner today. Wear the fox hat!"

With the revelation of Bear Island and the roadmap showing at the 6-12 month moving water and in 12+ Months canoes. The time will soon be ripe for Crabs, Lobsters, Mussels and Seals!

Don't get me wrong, I'd like more land animals too. But their is literally a sea of opportunity to be had as well.

While a fox will do that behavior a pine martin or other weasel is more likely. They prey on rabbits and squirrels anyways and have no problem with carrion or stealing from traps.

As for nocturnal creatures, I'd love to see owls :geek:

Or even just hear them. That would add to the atmosphere

It think owls are already included in the sound files that play at night, but they lack a physical model. Which led to a pretty funny hunt for the "elusive owl" a looong time ago.

Huh. I'm usually fishing if I'm out after dark so I've never actually heard them. @Scyzara and @hauteecolerider: were the sounds specific to a map or just any outdoor nighttime location?

Sorry, I don't know for sure.  But I've definitely already heard it both in ML and PV in the past. (I remember that because I once ran around on these maps for several nights searching invisible owls :silly:). No idea if the hooting can be heard on other maps as well, but it's definitely possible.
