Cipher
First off, I love the game and can't wait till the story comes out. I got the game during the Christmas sale, it was actually a "tag along" buy with rust. However, once I started TLD it got me hooked. My "main" character is currently on 67 days (Voyager). Anyway to my question. When did (the player) appear in the game? Every time I come across a body that appears to have "given up" I wonder how long has it been since the geomagnetic storm and where have "I" been. There are a number of corpses that appear to have committed suicide. (Painkiller bottles next to the body) If that is the case, how did we fly/crash into the Canadian wilderness where all humanity has been gone for a while. My guess is that much of the back story will be told when the story mode comes out, but just wanted to throw that question out there. Love the game keep up the great work!! hauteecolerider
I like to think the story picks up a short time after the protagonist's crash. Enough time for people to clear out/die, and enough time for our protagonist to wander around in a state of shock away from the original crash site. It would explain why the crash can't be found; I like to role-play that the game starts when the protagonist comes out of panic mode, pauses to take stock of the situation, and decides to take charge of his/her own fate (i.e. be proactively focused on surviving rather than reactively focused on finding help). This sort of ambiguity is what I love about this game - you notice these details here and there, and start wondering how things ended up the way they are . . . Dirmagnos
As far as i can tell game takes place directly after Event. EM storm took your plane down and you start from there. Abundance of corpses dont really mean anything. Generally, in case of major disasters, greatest loss of life is in first few hours after it. And cold and wildlife takes care of the rest. For example, in case of Flight 571 crash, once survivors learned that no1 is looking for them and there is no food left, it took them just 2 days to resolve to cannibalism. Harsh reality breaks people real fast.

The fact that the bodies look mostly intact suggests to me that the EM event happened not long ago. I just don't think the game starts immediately after the protagonist's crash, but a short time (like 3 - 24 hours later) when the protagonist realizes he/she is really on their own. I RP that I suffered a head injury - not serious enough to be debilitating, but just enough to cause disorientation (and thence wandering away from the crash). Flight 571, and other famous cases of cannibalism did not involve killing people for food, but rather eating the flesh of already dead people in the absence of other alternatives. I read the accounts of that crash, and that of the Donner Party in California, and the survivors agreed to eat the dead together. In other terms, they came to that decision collectively as the best chance of survival. In their situation, I would have done the same thing. After all, Mom tastes like chicken, and dead is dead.
